Why does my sprained ankle still hurt ?

I was jumping on my friends trampoline a month ago. I fell and sprained my ankle. I went to the emergency room and they just gave me a brace and crutches. When I walk on it for a while it starts hurting really bad. When I don't move it for a while it gets very stiff and hurts. Can somebody tell me what might be going on ?
