Is GDP per capita really a true representation of the distribution of wealth?

Because it's quite obvious not everyone in the United states earns : $47,000 and not everyone in the U.K earns $36,000 ( I know for a fact my dad makes �33,000 so $52,000. Is it really a good measure?
